How Leaders Add Value

There are three ways in which an excellent leader adds value. Equally there are three ways in which a bad leaders destroys value. This all applies in businesses, families, public sector organisations, schools, government and the local cricket or netball club.

Excellent leaders establish and model clear, consistent, positive values. People do as the leader does, not as the leader says. Living and breathing your espoused values is critical to excellent leadership.
Excellent leaders have a clear, consistent, positive vision. Does your team know where you are heading or not? Is it somewhere positive? Do you get distracted?
Excellent leaders inspire people to pursue the vision whilst championing the values. Are people racing ahead because they are inspired or dragging their feet because they have gone dead on the inside?

OK. Now make a list of leaders in any field who fit the above positive categories and notice how easy or diffficult it is for you to do so.

Bad leaders simply fail on one or more of the above.

So now make another list of those who fail the test on one or more of these three key criteria. Was that easier or more difficult than the list of excellent leaders?

So now, what are you going to do about it?
